Great Expectations

Since I started my journey into photography last year, no one in my circle of friends has been pregnant.   Seems that I just missed the boom-time (at least in my little world).  As a result I haven’t had easy opportunities to take maternity pictures.  I was thrilled when I found out that one of my neighbors was expecting this month, and when she agreed to be a subject this weekend for me to do a practice session.  When I saw her on Saturday she was a bit worried that the full moon on Sunday was going to cause her to go into labor, but last I checked she’s still hanging in there.  Her older two are so excited about the baby’s arrival that they can barely stand it.  Turning the calendar page over to March was certainly a cause for celebration yesterday at their house!

I wanted to focus on taking some timeless photographs for them that captured this moment in their lives.  To make things even more exciting for them all, they are moving out of the area in mid-April, so I know this next month will be a total blur for them.

I hope these pictures froze a few memories for you B family.  I can’t wait to meet your new little one.

This last one isn’t a maternity shot, but I just can’t get over how cute Miss R was being.  She and her big Brother Mr. N were terrific photographer’s assistants.  They sat with me and made Mom and Dad laugh and whispered to make the baby kick.  They are going to be a great Big Sister and Big Brother!

Baby D

I was invited by an old friend last week to take pictures of their newborn Baby D.  He was born shortly before the series of blizzards blasted our area earlier this month.  In fact, they drove home from the hospital under treacherous conditions during the first of the back-to-back-to-back storms we received.

Baby D was only 3 weeks old when I took the pictures, but he was already past the “curl me up and I’ll fall asleep anywhere” phase.  His parents had warned me that he’d been fairly difficult so far, but the little man I saw was a darling.  He stayed awake and alert and happy for almost 2 hours!  His grandparents were visiting so we were able to get some precious shots of them with Baby D.   We spent the last half hour desperately trying to get him to fall asleep so that we could get some posed baby shots, but he had some plans of his own.  Here are a few of my favorite shots from the day. I love that he’s looking right at the camera in this first one!

There is nothing sweeter than a baby in his Daddy’s arms.

And finally asleep…

February 25, 2010 - 6:48 pm Billie Mitchell - He is adorable. I love the first shot too. Precious! Thanks for sharing.

February 25, 2010 - 9:26 pm KC - Love love LOVE the daddy one!!!

March 5, 2010 - 6:02 am ajira - The shot with baby curled up against mama is so sweet. Brings back memories of my little one doing the same thing.

It’s All In The Details.

One of the things I’m learning as I continue to develop my photography skills is how much I enjoy the telling of the story.  I love taking the pictures that capture the emotion and the love between family members, but I also love taking pictures of the details that describe this moment in time.  Often as parents we want a picture without the dirty favorite blankie, or without the pacifier in their mouth, but sometimes those are the pictures that really remind us what our children were like at a given stage.  Many a mother struggling to potty train has been told that our child “won’t go off to college wearing diapers”, and while the potty training may not be a memory that you want to relive forever, the same thing applies to many other childhood phases.  In a blink of an eye, Thomas the Tank Engine becomes replaced by superheroes and sits alone in the toybox.

I spent some time this afternoon trying to capture some of the details of my Kindergartner and the things that matter the most to him right now.  This was a lot of fun and something that can easily be done in a free afternoon.  They may not be the pictures that you frame and hang in your living room, but when you look back through your photos years from now you’ll probably have some great memories of what was important to you (and to your kids) today.

Big C got several packages of Legos for Christmas.  A month ago I had to sit with him and talk him through each step as we followed the instructions.  The other morning I got up and found this whole battalion already assembled and ready for action.

He has also become a master at Wii Mario Kart.  He has single-handedly defeated almost every challenge in the game.  He’s working on unlocking his final few challenges right now.  His skill is apparently becoming widely known, as his friends have invited him over several times to have him help unlock things on their games.

Like most kindergartners, he is working very hard on developing his reading skills.  It’s amazing how quickly it comes when it finally clicks.  There’s no more secret spelling going on between his dad and me with Big C around.

This is the growth stick hanging on his wall.  We love measuring him every three months and marking his growth!

This is our newest pal.  His name is Poe.

When your kiddos complain that you’re taking too many pictures of them, enlist them to help you with this detail project.  I even inspired my boys to get their cameras and take pictures of their favorite things too.  They both took a lot of pictures of the TV… but it’s fun to see it all from their perspective.

February 19, 2010 - 7:46 am Jen - Fun:-) I love the growth stick! We just put our kids' marks on a wall, but you can move a growth stick it you need to paint or if you move houses- genius! Where did you get it?

February 19, 2010 - 9:50 am Kelli - Kelly..I love these pics! I too have a kindergartener was going to do details of his life..great photos!

February 19, 2010 - 1:23 pm Michelle - Aren't the details of their lives captivating? It is nice to take a break from every day happenings to focus on the stuff that is most important to them. :)

February 19, 2010 - 1:23 pm Charisse Rhodes - Very nice Kelly. I really enjoyed your images and their story. What a great idea to have your kids help assemble or photograph their own project along side of you! Thanks for sharing!

February 19, 2010 - 5:58 pm KC - I love this post. I think it is one of my favorites. Being new to the "parenting" world as I have jumped in with teenagers, I think this is a fantastic idea. M and I were talking the other day about ZeZe, T's favorite stuffed Zebra that she took every where until she was like 5. (It had to have surgery a few times along the way) How awesome would it be to have a pic of that??!!??

Spring Fever

Had enough of the snow?  Me too.  Let’s start thinking positively about the fact that at some point the snow will be gone, flowers will start poking their heads out of the ground and you’ll be ready to take some spring portraits of your family.  Book your Spring session with me before February 28th and receive a complimentary 8×10 photo.   My weekend sessions will be limited, so book early to ensure a spot on my schedule!

February 9, 2010 - 8:19 am julieg - love this pic...and would love for it to be warm with sunshine and flowers! Time has surely gone by quickly! She doesn't even look like this girl anymore! Hope to catch up with you soon!

February 13, 2010 - 3:13 pm Marcia Stuhler - Melt that snow away with mental power! :-)

February 14, 2010 - 8:31 pm Sara Ippolito - I am so ready for spring!!! What a cute girl and I love her dress.

Snow. Again!

This has been quite a winter.  I can clearly remember when D and I were considering our move back to Virginia from the Atlanta area.  One of the things we were looking forward to was snow.  Having grown up in the Mid-Atlantic, snow was a normal part of my childhood.  I can still remember waking up in the middle of the night and peeking over at my window.  I didn’t even have to look out the blinds.  I could just tell by the glow.  If it was pink – it was snowing!  I would get up early on snowy days and we’d sit around the kitchen hoping the AM radio station would say we’d be able to stay home.  Now, we get the notices by email, a robo-phone call, and constant streaming of closings and delays on tv.  Kids today have it so easy… :)

I am sitting here right now watching the snow fall for the third time this week.  We had a few inches of powder last Saturday, followed by a few more inches on Tuesday and a day off from school on Wednesday.  Yesterday they called school off at 4pm for today as the predicted “crippling snowstorm” made a beeline for Loudoun County.  They’ve moved to round-the-clock coverage on the local news stations so that they can report on the fact that there are no groceries on the shelves.  The way they’re reporting on this storm, you would forget that we lived through the same thing a month ago.  Big C told me the other day, that he thought it might be ok if we lived somewhere that didn’t have a lot of snowstorms in the winter.  Like maybe the beach.  That’s sounding pretty good to me right now.

I’m sure I’ll have more images to post after the weekend, but I can’t let a whole week go by without posting.   First off, these are a few from last weekend as the snow came down.  I overexposed the first one, but I love the action shot.

These last two are from after the mid-week snow.  Compared to the weekend snow which we swept away with a broom, this stuff was really sticky and made great snowmen.  We got an accessory kit for Christmas, which has really come in handy!

For those of you in our area, stay warm and enjoy the weekend.  If you’re somewhere warm, and thinking of commenting on how nice it is where you are, please don’t rub it in too badly!

February 5, 2010 - 3:36 pm Cindy - Kelly, you can rest assured that I don't have anything to "rub in" since we are also getting some snow here in northern Italy! In fact... this evening when I was walking toward home (struggling with pushing the stroller through the inch or two of snow already on the ground) I was completely awestruck at the SIZE of the snow flakes falling down. They were simply HUUUUGE. I mean, GIGANTIC. It was amazing... They were so big, in fact, that with the light from the street lights, the flakes were actually casting SHADOWS on the snow as they fell to the ground. I don't think I've ever seen that before... It would have been cool to be able to take pictures of the huge snow flakes, so it's too bad that you weren't here to enjoy it! :) As always.... great pictures and thanks for sharing 'em!

February 5, 2010 - 7:10 pm KC - LOVE love love the snowman!!! and the 1st shot of Big C is very cool!! The beach is sounding good to me too (and I dont do bathing suits)

February 6, 2010 - 3:16 pm Barb L - The beach sounds wonderful about now! Really love your pics! Your boys are precious. These are the days they'll look back on and treasure their memories of snow and snow days too! Great, fun work here! Thanks for sharing :)

February 14, 2010 - 8:34 pm Sara Ippolito - That snowman kit is so cool. We were trying to srape together random food items for ours. I laughed when I read your comment about it looking pink out because Brandon was just telling me that this evening. He was looking outside for the pink glow in the sky and I has never heard that before. Of course I am from the south so what do I know about snow?

Project 365: The first month.

So today is January 29th, which means I’ve been at this 365 project for almost a month now.  It’s really been a great inspiration for me to pick up my camera every day, if only to take a few shots, and it’s given me some good fodder for my blog.  Things have been kind of slow here this week. I don’t really have anything really of interest to post about, so I thought I’d share a few of my favorite shots from this past month.  I can’t let an entire week go by without a post!

Day 8
These are Little C’s Frog boots, which I found at Target the day before our December blizzard.  They were the only boots left in the store that fit him, but he seems to love them.

Day 12
If you know me at all, you’ve probably seen me with a Diet Coke in my hand, and my iPhone is never far from my side…

Day 15
This one was taken one morning as I was heading to the basement to run on the treadmill. I couldn’t believe the color in the sky at sunrise that day.

Day 23
This one was taken with my iPhone as I sat in the car wash. I was pretty excited that I caught this shot as the first rinse cycle came on.

Day 26
Although I didn’t win the SOAR scholarship, I am still following along with the challenges that the recipients are working on. The first of those was for us to take a picture of an object that represents where we are right now. This is my picture from that challenge.

Day 28
This one was taken yesterday with my iPhone when Big C and I had our donut date. He chose the “Blueberry Hill” donut.  It was very blue.

So that’s a quick look back at the past month.  I’m honestly surprised that I’ve kept up with it every day.  I kind of thought this would be something that I’d do for a week and then get tired of.  So far though, I’m loving it!  I realize that I am running out of things around my house to take pictures of, so it’s going to get harder going forward.  I’m not sure I’m going to be as inspired come November, but this has been a lot of fun and something to look forward to and challenge myself with each day.  I love that I’ve now taken out my camera and taken at least one great picture every day for the past month.  I’m teaching myself new things about my camera and myself, and forcing myself to expand my creativity. For anyone out there thinking of taking on a project like this, I highly recommend it.  The most important step towards becoming a better photographer is to Take More Pictures!

January 29, 2010 - 2:34 pm Cindy - Wow, Kelly.... all the pictures are fantastic, but I especially love the sunrise picture. It doesn't even look real! It's like a painter's depiction of what sunrise SHOULD look like. Amazing. Glad to hear that you're having fun so far with your 365 project.... Good luck keeping the creativity up!! :)

January 29, 2010 - 3:01 pm Michelle - NICE! These are stunning. I love the vibrancy of the crayons.

January 29, 2010 - 3:51 pm Lisa - Hey! I'm one of your fellow SOAR Sisters. Anyway, the 365 project sure is fun, isn't it?! I just started mine a week and a half ago. I love your photos, especially the one you caught on your iphone in the car wash. keep up the good work!

January 29, 2010 - 11:35 pm Marcia Stuhler - I am so glad I am not the only one that has realized that they are running out of things to take shots of in the house! I love the 365 group too! I have only faltered one day and that was two days ago so I am pretty impressed at myself too...we must keep everyone inspired!

January 30, 2010 - 9:05 am Marla-Dee - Kelly, It has been great watching your photos this month and can't wait to see what you come up with next month!

Friday Afternoon…

Today was kind of a bummer of a day.  My little guy has been battling something all week and woke up this morning feeling pretty bad.  He rarely sits still, but spent much of the morning curled up in my lap – combine that with the fact that he didn’t want to eat lunch, and I knew something had to be wrong.  We got an appointment at the pediatrician’s office, and it turns out he has an ear infection.  Not that it’s good news, but at least now we have an antibiotic and can fight off the crud he’s been dealing with since Monday.

This afternoon, after Big C got home from school and Little C woke up from his nap, the three of us sat at the kitchen table for a while eating snacks, and playing.  A little snack always makes everything better!

Although I’ve told you several stories about Big C, I’ve been remiss in taking and posting pictures of him.  He willingly posed for one picture this afternoon, giving me his official Picture Smile.

Now that D and I got iPhones, he occasionally gets to play with D’s old iPod Touch.  Here he is deep in concentration.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!  Hopefully everyone here will be healthy enough to enjoy ours!

January 22, 2010 - 10:29 pm Sue - Sorry to hear that little C is still not feeling well. Hope the meds "kick in" this weekend. Great pics of big "C"!

January 23, 2010 - 6:49 am KC - Poor little man...I hope he is feeling better. Big C looks so much like his daddy in these pictures. I love the black and white one of little C's finger and the cookies.

January 23, 2010 - 9:51 pm Sara Ippolito - Poor little C :( Love his little hand in the fist shot.

January 25, 2010 - 12:01 pm Patty Reiser - Hope you son is feeling better now. Wishing you a picture perfect week.

Love/Hate

I hate to run.  Have I told you that?  I’ve hated running since I was in the first grade and we had to run around the soccer field in PE.  The stitch in my side, and the sore throat on cool days were enough to make me dread gym class.  It made matters worse that in first grade I was attending a private “prep” school, where the training for running intensive sports like field hockey and lacrosse started on day one.

In junior high, I discovered the sport of Volleyball.  There were occasional quick sprints to get a ball, and there was one time that one teammate had detention so we all had to run around the gym, but aside from that, there was little to no running involved.  I liked playing volleyball.

In college I met, fell in love with, and married D, who loves to run.   He’d rather run after a long day at work than just about anything else.  It’s how he unwinds, clears his head, and makes peace with things.  I don’t “get” that.  In 2001, I spent about a year “running” to try to get in shape, and to not be left out when D went out on his training runs.  I ran the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, and the DisneyWorld 1/2 marathon in Orlando.  The only way I managed to do that was with a forced set of schedules and training plans.  I can’t say I enjoyed a single minute of any of that training,

After having two kids, I’ve come to terms with the fact that the only way I can get my body into any sort of shape is by running.  I’ve somewhat made peace with it, and I do it out of necessity, not out of any kind of affinity for it.  These days, it’s me and the treadmill (remember, I don’t do cold) in the basement, my iPod, and closed captioning on ESPN at 6:30 each morning.  On days that I don’t run, my shoes sit and mock me when I go downstairs to play with the boys.

Today, I ran longer than I’ve gone since last summer when I injured my hip.  I learned yesterday that there will be a 5K in our neighborhood in March.  I’ve made a plan to start training so that I can run the whole thing and not make a fool out of myself.  I just hope it’s not too cold that day….

January 21, 2010 - 3:00 pm Sue - I'm proud of you, Kel! I've always wanted to be a runner...

January 21, 2010 - 4:11 pm SlackerMama - I'm a big fan of the iPod + Close Captioning combo while on our elliptical. I also TiVo "What Not To Wear" which I'll watch, too. Good luck in your race...I'm sure you'll do great!

January 21, 2010 - 7:16 pm KC - You go girl!!! I wish I had your discipline...love the black and white of this, just seems fitting...

January 21, 2010 - 9:17 pm Marcia Stuhler - My best friends husband was just like you. When they met she ran all the time and just like your husband it helped her clear her mind. Well one day I happened to be over (from a late night of partying) and they were both up and had on their running shoes. I said Scott do you run? He said no, I am doing it for her! ;-)

Baby A

This weekend, I was invited to take pictures of a ten day old beauty.  Her father is my oldest friend’s little brother.  I still think of him as the ten year old kid he was when I first knew him – covered in popcorn, legos strewn across the basement, shooting at me with a nerf blaster gun.  Turns out he’s all grown up now, and a loving husband, and gentle father.

This first one is my favorite.  To me it says “Family”.

I cut her off a bit here, but you can just see the love and pride on their faces.

By this point, she was tired of us and ready to go to sleep.

V&J, it was a privilege to document your new family.  I wish you all the best.

January 18, 2010 - 10:00 pm Crissie - Oh Kelly - these are absolutely scrumptious!!!!!!!! What a wonderful job and what a beautiful family and precious little girl. xoxo

January 18, 2010 - 11:01 pm Kelli - Kelly! I love them! I the close up of the feet! Great job!

January 19, 2010 - 6:26 am Sue - Wow, Kelly! well done!

January 19, 2010 - 8:59 am Kate - They're breathtaking, Kelly! I love the one with that secret little smile. I wonder what he was thinking? Precious.

January 19, 2010 - 10:10 am KC - Beautiful!! Love the black and whites and the one of them holding her feet is my favorite!!

January 19, 2010 - 10:52 am Lisa Kenning - These are amazing!! I love them all but my favorite is the yawn :)

Un-Broken.

Last Monday, I wrote about how I broke my son’s heart.  After his initial sadness, I thought he had forgotten about the bracelet, and moved on to other things.

As part of a positive reinforcement program in the classroom, each day that the students “stay on green” (or don’t have to be reprimanded in the classroom) they receive a sticker.  Each time that they amass 10 stickers they get to go to the “Treasure Chest”, which is a goodie box full of trinkets.  It turns out that Friday was Big C’s day to get a Treasure.  When I picked him up after school, he walked out with the biggest grin on his face, and pulled this from his pocket.

I’m sure there were some snickers from the boys in his class as he chose the pink flowery Bratz bracelet, but he wanted to make things right for his Mommy.  I broke down in tears right there on the sidewalk.

Gosh I love that kid.

January 17, 2010 - 4:06 pm KC - oh my goodness..Im crying...That is the sweetest thing ever!!

January 17, 2010 - 4:15 pm Kate - That's one spectacular boy you've got there, Kelly. Surely your heart was bursting with pride!! Thank you for sharing this lovely update.

January 17, 2010 - 5:18 pm Sue - Kelly, I'm in tears...What a great little guy! Sue

January 17, 2010 - 8:59 pm Sara Ippolito - Now I'm in tears again! You should put this one in a safe place and maybe you can wear it to his wedding one day... sniff sniff :)

January 18, 2010 - 9:13 am RachelL - That is soooo sweet! You're a lucky mom :)

January 18, 2010 - 10:04 am Feuza - How precious, so cute, I have 2 boys but no gifts like these yet~ I read both posts and it just warmed my heart God Bless

January 18, 2010 - 10:06 pm Marla-Dee - Oh Kelly, you are doing a fantastic job to have such a thoughtful child. He is such a sweetie!
