FAQs and SBAQs | Ashburn Lifestyle Photography

There are basic questions that I am asked before every photo session – what should we wear?, where will we meet?, how much will it cost?, etc.  But there are a few questions that don’t get asked that I call the SBAQs (should be asked questions).  These questions are often more important than the FAQs, but ones that clients don’t always think to ask about in advance.  I thought I’d share a few here with you today, along with a few favorite photos from my session with the F Family last fall on the beautiful Grounds at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA.

1.) How should we prep the kids for our session?

First of all, make sure everyone is well-rested and well-fed before the session!  Don’t schedule the session during nap time and make sure to bring a few easy (clean!) snacks in case we need a pick-me-up.  If your kiddos feel like the photo shoot is part of their natural playtime, your images will be full of personality!

Fujita-003The best advice pre-session advice I can give you is to talk it up with enthusiasm!  When you go to visit Nana and Pop, or you’re planning a trip to the beach, I’m sure you talk about it a lot.  You probably ask the kids what they’re most looking forward to, or if it’s somewhere new that you’re going you might tell them some of the exciting things that they can expect to do when you’re there.  When it comes to a photo session, you should do the exact same thing!  You can get the kids involved by sharing some of the things they like to do best with Mom and Dad, or bring a ball or kite for them to play with.  With older kids, practice some of the funny faces to see who can make their siblings laugh the most, or let them have some buy-in by offering input into their outfits.  Most of all, I encourage you and your husband to treat your family photo session as an adventure, not a chore!  When Dad gets out of the car and it’s obvious he doesn’t want to be there the kids see no reason to cooperate either.  If your kids see you looking forward to our session, chances are that they will too!

2.) What happens if we need to reschedule?

As long as I have availability, I’m always willing to accommodate my clients due to weather and illness.  We shoot in most weather conditions, but rain and soggy grass make for less than ideal conditions.  If your kids get sick or there’s an unexpected boo boo on the chin that will be obvious in our photos I will happily reschedule the session.

We all know that there are some days when your kids just aren’t feeling like themselves.  Maybe there was a time-out on the way to our session.  Maybe their favorite blankie got left at home.  Whatever the reason, as their parent, you know they are just not feeling it.  If you call it off within the first 10 minutes of our session, and agree to pay the complete session fee at that time, we can reschedule for another time that we mutually agree upon.  This is a one-time second chance, and gives you the peace of mind to know that you’ll truly get pictures of your kids at their best!

3.) Can I share my digital photos online?

Sure! I just ask you to make sure they come from the watermarked ‘Web Only’ folder that you receive with your digital files, and that you don’t re-crop your images to remove the watermark that I include when posting on Facebook.  Posting watermarked images helps prevent your images from being stolen and used without your permission. We want to make sure your privacy is protected online at all times.

We all want your family photo shoot to go as smoothly as possible, and hopefully some of these tips will help you make the most out of your session.  If you’re one of those crazy busy families with multiple sports happening once Spring rolls around, right now is a great time to book your session while everything is a little bit slower.  I’m running a great special for sessions scheduled before March 31.  Click here to learn more and learn how to schedule yours today!
